Radar map of the lunar north polar region

Published April 29, 2011

The Mini-RF radar conducted a polar imaging campaign, whose goals were to explore the permanently shadowed crater floors that exist in the polar regions. Over 98% of both polar regions were imaged. This image shows a mosaic that consists of several hundred passes of Mini-RF data. It covers within 20° latitude of the Moon’s north polar region. The mosaic shows the circular polarization ratio which is a scientific product we produce to measure surface roughness and can also be used to search for ice deposits.
